Sukiyaki is a Japanese dish that has been around for centuries.

  • 1.5 kg beef
  • 2 onions
  • 3 carrots
  • 3 celery stalks
  • 1 leek
  • 1 head of garlic
  • 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger
  • 50 g toasted sesame seeds

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp sugar

Instructions:

Step 1: Chop The Beef Into Cubes

To make the broth, start by chopping the beef into 2 cm cubes. If you’re using a leaner cut of beef, you can leave the fat on, but if you’re using a fattier cut, trim off any excess fat.

Step 2: Peel And Chop The Vegetables

Next, peel and chop the onions, carrots, celery, leek, garlic, and ginger. There’s no need to be too precise with the chopping since everything will be getting simmered in the broth anyway.

Step 3: Toast The Sesame Seeds

Toasting the sesame seeds is optional, but it really brings out their flavor. You can do this in a dry pan over medium heat or in a 350°F (180°C) oven. Just make sure to watch them carefully so they don’t burn.
